Date: 30 January 2024 (started) 16 March 2024 (completed)

Starting 30th January a pilot between Waikato rural hospital EDs and Whakarongorau will enable patients triaged to the ED waiting room to receive a secondary triage from a doctor utilising the patients own device and the hospital wi-fi. The pilot is giving patients an opportunity to experience a telehealth consultation and enable them to gain confidence in this mode of delivery in order for them to have increased choice of healthcare options outside of the ED next time they may need care. The pilot will enable patients to be “seen” and treated by the doctor (utilising an 0800 number that can be converted to video or image upload). The patient may be given self care advice/prescription or may be asked to remain in the ED for in-person treatment and/or to have care expedited where necessary.
