Tāpiri Mai was initiated originally to enable high quality video consultations at the Hauora clinics of the islands for both general practice and hospital outpatient appointments. The driver for this was that travel to the usual locations for healthcare delivery is both costly and time consuming for the island residents.

The project is socially driven and led by the communities. The process of co-design and engaging with the island residents revealed that the real on-going problem to be addressed was how to best improve access to healthcare for communities who live at logistically challenging distances from their healthcare providers.
