Island telehealth enablement
Organisation: Western Bay of Plenty Primary Health, Bay of Plenty District Health Board and Western Bay of Plenty District Council
Date of project: August 2021
Two projects are underway to better enable the delivery of healthcare to Motiti and Matakana islanders via the use of telehealth.
The projects began by consulting the local elders on the islands and then the GPs who visit those communities (either fortnightly or monthly) to determine their needs. Both islands require upgrades of its infrastructure to enable reasonable quality video consults and this is factored into the enablement workstream. Equipment for measuring vital signs and enabling video consults has been donated to each of their local Hauora clinics.
The projects are a collaboration between Western Bay of Plenty Primary Health Organisation, Bay of Plenty District Health Board and the Western Bay of Plenty District Council. It is envisaged this new capability will complement the services that they already receive and it will support clinics held by both primary and secondary care services.
