NZ Telehealth Forum & Resource Centre - March Update

Kia ora koutou,

This is a difficult, stressful time for everyone, whether in the health sector or not, and we are very grateful as an organisation to all of you for your ongoing support. Thanks to our many contributors, in particular our Strategic Advisory Board (SAB), working groups and their chairs.

While Omicron rampages across the motu, changes to the health system in Aotearoa continue to develop and the New Zealand Telehealth Leadership Group (NZTLG) has been actively involved in bringing issues of healthcare access and inequity, alongside proposed solutions to these discussions. One particular “labour of love” for NZTLG has been the “Patient Anywhere, Specialist Elsewhere” (PASE) model. This model is based on the premise that a patient should be able to access specialist healthcare (whether that is speech language therapy or oncology) from wherever they may be; from home, in an emergency department, GP surgery or in their own local outpatient clinic. This could even be at their local marae or other community gathering place. The New Zealand health reforms gives an opportunity to do things differently and with the promise of a shared electronic record, national scheduling and a national employer, many barriers to PASE have been broken down.

For really great examples of these sorts of programmes check out WA Country Health Service - Emergency Telehealth Service and RPA Virtual as well as our webinar on the topic International Leaders . The PASE working group is nearing the end of editing a paper prepared for peer review journal submission and we look forward to sharing that soon. Speaking of research papers, Inga Hunter, associate professor at Massey University, has recently had a terrific paper accepted for publication - Enabling Rural Telehealth: Focus Group Study with Older Adults in Underserved Rural Communities which adds great insights to our rural Aotearoa knowledge base.

Once again, thanks to all of you. We hope you enjoy this newsletter, please do circulate it among friends and colleagues; we are always happy to have feedback and more members. The sort of work we do requires a village and we could not do this without all of you. Keep well.

In the news: Southern DHB staff call on patients to drive telehealth rollout

It's great to see some of our Forum members in the national news flying the flag for telehealth in Aotearoa New Zealand, read the Stuff news article about Southern District Health Board's telehealth roll-out . Well done to all involved! There's still much to do in the telehealth space - with many patients ready and waiting to try telehealth for the first time or to keep doing more of it. We're here to support NZ health organisations and health professionals on their telehealth journey, so reach out if you need assistance:

Rural Smart Health project

The Rural Smart Health (RSH) project, a collaboration between Massey University, NZ Telehealth Leadership Group and Forum, Vensa Health and other commercial partners, explored telehealth requirements for older adults living rurally in underserved populations. The project focused on a specific population group, with the intention to expose findings which will inform the general population. Rural communities see great benefit from using telehealth to improve access to healthcare but there are some challenges to address.

A pre-print version of the article Enabling Rural Telehealth: Focus Group Study with Older Adults in Underserved Rural Communities is now available.

Case study - Delivering virtual health care a positive experience

Dr Michelle Downie has been using telehealth since the beginning of the pandemic last year and says delivering health care remotely has exceeded her expectations.

“I was initially unsure if I could do it successfully, but after a good six months of using telehealth consistently, I found there were only a couple of follow-up patients who I really needed to see in-person subsequent to their remote consultation. I was surprised there was such a low proportion of people where I couldn’t do what I needed to do over a phone or video call.” Dr Downie, a Southland Hospital General Physician and Endocrinologist, says the majority of feedback from patients has been positive.
